NIMCET Entrance Exam [NIT MCA Common Entrance Test]

Exam Description:

National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are leading technical institutes of national repute and are fully funded by government of India. The curricula and syllabi for Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program offered by NITs are designed keeping in mind the needs of different software organizations in India and abroad. The NIMCET is a National Level Entrance Test conducted by NITs for admission to their MCA course.

Eligibility Indian Nationals securing 60% marks or 6.5/10 CGPA (55% or 6.0/10 CGPA for SC/ST) in each of the examinations of 12th level with Mathematics and Bachelor’s Degree of full time 3 year duration from a recognized University with any one of the following as one of the subjects Mathematics Statistics Business Mathematics Discrete Mathematics Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science Business Statistics Computational Mathematics Elementary Mathematics Elementary Statistics Those who have done Bridge Course in Mathematics are also eligible to apply. The percentages of marks for (i) and (ii) given above are to be calculated on the basis of method used by respective Board / University. Students completing degree from Open Universitiesare also eligible to apply provided their course is approved by UGC/AICTE / Distance Education Council (DEC) of Government of India.The candidates who are appearing for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply for NIMCET 2012. Such candidates shall have to furnish the proof of fulfilling the eligibility criteria of NIMCET2011 preferably at the time of Counseling/Admission but not later than August, 2012, failing which, their admission may be cancelled by the respective NITs.State quota is applicable only for the state of Tamil Nadu .Candidate passed / appeared for qualifying exam from Tamil Nadu will be eligible for Tamil Nadu State Quota of NIT – Trichurapalli. For all other NIT’s only all India quota is applicable.

Syllabus The syllabus for the NIMCET Entrance Examentrance exam has been given in the tabulated format below: Mathematics Set Theory Concepts of sets – Union – Intersection – Cardinality – Elementary counting permutations and combinations. Probability and Statistics Basic concepts of probability theory, Averages, Dependent and independent events, frequency distributions, measures of central tendencies and dispersions. Algebra Fundamental operations in Algebra, Expansions, Factorization, simultaneous linear / quadratic equations, indices, logarithms, arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions, determinants and matrices. Coordinate Geometry Rectangular Cartesian coordinates, distance formulae, equation of a line, intersection of lines, pair of straight lines, equations of a circle, parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Calculus Limit of functions, Continuous function, Differentiation of function, tangents and normals, simple examples of maxima and minima. Integration of function by parts, by substitution and by partial fraction; Definite integrals, Applications of Definite Integrals to areas. Vectors Position vector, addition and subtraction of vectors, scalar and vector products and their applications to simple geometrical problems and mechanics. Trigonometry Simple identities, trigonometric equations, properties of triangles, solution of triangles, heights and distances, General solutions of trigonometric equations. Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning The questions in this section will cover logical situations and questions based on the facts given in the passage. Computer Awareness Computer Basics Organization of a Computer, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Structure of instructions in CPU, input/output devices, computer memory, back-up devices. Data Representation Representation of characters, integers and fractions, binary and hexadecimal representations, Binary Arithmetic Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, simple arithmetic and two’s complement arithmetic, floating point representation of numbers, Boolean algebra, truth tables, Venn diagrams. General English Questions in this section will be designed to test the candidate’s general understanding of English language. There will be questions on the following topics Comprehension, Vocabulary, Basic English Grammar (like usage of correct forms of verbs, prepositions and articles), word power, synonyms and antonyms, meaning of words and phrases, technical writing
