UPSC Civil Services Aptitude Test [CSAT] 2017

Exam Description:

An Overview on UPSC CSAT 2017:

The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year to select candidates for Civil Services Main Exam.

Those who pass the Mains Exam and Interview can join prestigious Indian government services such as IAS, IPS, etc.

The Indian Administrative Services is special as it works internally for the smooth functioning of law and order without any hindrance. An IAS officer holds important positions in the Union Government, States, and public-sector undertakings.

An officer selected into the IAS gets exposure in various roles like the Collector, Commissioner, Chief Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, etc.

The Civil Services Exam is a paper based test and consists of two successive stages:

  • Preliminary Examination (Objective type) comprising 2 exams: General Studies and CSAT
  • Civil Services Main Examination (Written and Interview)

Eligibility Criteria of UPSC CSAT 2017:

Nationality: You should be the citizens of India for the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service.

Age Limit: You should not age less than 21 years and not more than 32 years. (In case of candidates belonging to SC/ ST category, the upper age limit is relaxable up to five years. In case of OBC candidates, the upper age limit is relaxable up to three years).

Educational Qualification: 

  • A candidate must be a graduate from a recognised university or a deemed university.
  • A candidate who has appeared for the final year of bachelor's degree and awaiting the result, along with candidates who intend to appear at such qualifying examinations can also apply, provided that they submit their proof of qualification along with the application for the Mains exam.
  • A candidate who possesses professional and technical qualification recognised by Government equivalent to the professional and technical degree can also apply.
  • A candidate who has passed the final professional M.B.B.S. or any other Medical Examination but has not completed internship by the time of submission of the application for the Civil Services (Main) Examination can also apply.

Number of Attempts: You can apply to a maximum of 6 times for CSAT. The candidates belonging to OBC category can apply for a total of nine times. This restriction on the number of attempts will not apply in the case of Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe candidates.

Syllabus for CSAT Preliminary Exams, Paper-I:

Current events of national and international importance.
History of India and Indian National Movement.
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change
General Science

Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and Problem-solving skills
General mental ability

Application Process for UPSC CSAT 2017:
  • Application to UPSC CSAT can be made either online or offline depending on the candidates wish.
  • Application forms (both, online and offline) are available at www.upsconline.nic.in.
  • After submission of personal details, print the SBI bank challan on an A4-size paper. 
  • The printed payslip needs to be used for payment of application fee to CSAT.
  • For an offline mode of application, the application form is to be sent to the mentioned address before the last date.
