With the enactment of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University Act, 2016, with effect from 7th October, 2016, the erstwhile Rajendra Agricultural University, Bihar, Pusa (Samastipur) is converted into Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University.  Prior to the establishment of Rajendra Agricultural University (RAU) post-graduate teaching programme was carried out at Bihar Agriculture College, Sabour and Ranchi Agriculture College, Kanke under Bhagalpur and Ranchi University, respectively. After establishment of RAU, post-graduate teaching programme was started in the year 1972 at Dholi campus of RAU which in turn was shifted to main campus at Pusa during 1980. In the beginning P.G. teaching was started with 08 students. Keeping in view the large requirements of the Agronomist for various sectors the in-take capacity was enhanced to 14 Students per year. Doctoral programme was started in the year 1980 with in-take capacity of 04 students per year. Since the start of the post-graduate teaching, Agronomy department has altogether awarded 349 M.Sc. and 65 Ph.D. degrees. The post- graduate teaching in Agricultural Economics started in year 1962 at Ranchi Agricultural College, Kanke, Ranchi with one Professor and one Assistant Professor and first batch of students passed out in 1963-64. After the establishment of Rajendra Agricultural University the post- graduate teaching along with positions of Professor and research projects like Agro- Economic Research and Comprehensive Cost of Cultivation Scheme were transferred from Ranchi Agriculture College, Kanke, to Tirhut College of Agriculture, Dholi, Muzaffarpur in 1975 which was subsequently shifted to Pusa with its constitution unit as Department of Agricultural Economics at TCA Dholi. For the first one and half decades the department concentrated mainly on developing and strengthening its under-graduate and post-graduate teaching programmes. It was in the year 1976-77 that the university decided to strengthen the faculty position of the department leading to initiation of Doctoral Programme in the Department in year 1983. The faculty members of the department specialize in the fields of Production Economics, Farm Management, Agricultural Finance, Agricultural Management, Agricultural Marketing, Resource Economics, Livestock Economics, Agricultural Labour and Agrarian Relations.
